Some Decays Are Very Insistent
Some tooth decays want to live forever. The primary reason for tooth structure replacement on existing restorations is recurring tooth decay. Aggressive forms of tooth decay are usually associated with inadequate salivary output or frequent exposure to fermentable carbohydrates. To reduce the potential of tooth decay, bioactive filling materials can be placed into the cavity to serve as a reservoir for fluoride. Because of this patient’s high decay rate, a resin-modified glass ionomer (a bioactive, fluoride-releasing intermediate material) was selected to reduce decay. This material is similar to composite resin, but its fluoride-releasing therapeutic effect aids in the management of tooth decay on the affected and adjacent teeth.
