Dental Implants Replace The Missing Tooth
If you have missing tooth or teeth, dental implants will lend a hand to you. Dental implants are screw or cylinder-like surgical devices that can be placed in the jaw where the previous natural tooth existed. These devices act as an artificial tooth root. An implant can be placed immediately after removal of a tooth or at a second surgery depending on the general health of the patient, quality and amount of supporting bone, location in the arch, bite forces from other teeth, and the preference of the surgeon and dentist. The implant and bone can bond together (osseointegrate) for 4 to 6 months to form an anchor for the artificial tooth. During this time, a temporary tooth replacement or healing cap can be worn over the implant site. After healing, an abutment is secured to the implant with a screw, and a dental crown is cemented over the abutment. Dental implants can provide a strong foundation for a single tooth (single-tooth implant) or multiple teeth (implant-supported bridges) and can stabilize a denture (implant-supported fixed or removable dentures).
