A post and core is a type of dental restoration that is used when there is inadequate tooth structure remaining to support a traditional restoration. These restorations can be used to replace the missing portion of severely broken-down teeth due to fracture of decay and require the tooth to be treated with root canal therapy. Posts come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Traditionally, posts have been fabricated using different metals; however, current evidence indicates the use of fibre-reinforced resin post systems for improved clinical success. The composite post is inserted and bonded into a prepared channel in the root and is used to anchor a composite core. Placing a composite post and core strengthens the tooth and provides better retention and support for the crown.
