The gum levels of teeth not only determine the esthetic potential for the smile but also define the crown length available for restoration. Gum line asymmetries are often treated surgically (periodontal crown lengthening or orthognathic surgery) but orthodontic treatment can also be an effective method of levelling the gum line architecture before restoring the teeth. Forced eruption is an orthodontic procedure of raising the root with gentle continuous force. Localized gum line asymmetries can sometimes be treated with this technique. An isolated tooth can be used to raise the gums and bone around the tooth, correcting gum defects. The part of the gum that fills the space between the teeth is called the interdental papilla.
