Crown lengthening is a cosmetic surgical procedure for exposing a greater amount of tooth structure. It can require gum and/or bone removal. This procedure may need to be performed after tooth fracture or excessive gum line decay to provide an adequate amount of tooth structure to support a crown. It is used to establish a healthy gum-bone relationship around existing restorations or before replacement. Also, this procedure is used to cosmetically treat a “gummy smile”. A gummy smile is when an unusual amount of gum tissue shows around the upper teeth when smiling.
