A crown is a tooth-shaped cover that replaces and supports a tooth that has been fractured and/or severely damaged by decay. These custom-made restorations can be made of porcelain, composite, alloy, or gold. If a large area of the tooth is missing, damaged, or decayed, a foundation called a build-up may be required before placing a crown. Usually the build-up is composed of a tooth-coloured filling material such as composite or resin-modified glass ionomer, which gives the tooth proper dimension and body to retain the crown.

Crowns are usually prepared and fabricated in two visits to the dentist, though some dentists have computer-aided design and manufacturing systems that allow fabrication and cementation in one visit.
