Smile design is not important only for individuals with natural teeth but also when creating and fitting an aesthetic denture. Dentures are prosthetic dental appliances that are designed to replace missing teeth and their surrounding gums and bone. There are two main types of dentures: complete dentures and overdentures. Complete dentures replace all teeth and can be placed immediately after removal of natural teeth or after a healing period.  Overdentures are similar to complete dentures but use one or more remaining natural teeth that are cut down and used for support and retention of the denture. A modern overdenture can be designed to be implant-supported. Teeth or implants underlying a denture preserve bone and improve the retention, stability, and support of the denture while improving facial support, function, and speech.
